Deaths: Burial: 07/07/27 McKINNEY JOHN E. 8 8 1866 7 1 1927 CITY The funeral of John E.McKinney was held Saturday, July 2,1927, with interment in the Forrest City cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev.Charles Franklin, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev.Morley of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Rev.McJunkin of the Presbyterian church, and Rev.Blount F.Davidson of the Baptist Church. Mr.McKinney died in Roanoke, Alabama, on Friday, July 1,1927, his death resulting from a stroke of paralysis two weeks previous. He was taken ill in Greenville, Ga., where he had been superintendent of the Greenville Cotton Oil Mill for fourteen years. Mr.McKinney was born in Holly Springs, Miss., on Aug.8,1866, and was married there to Miss Betty Wilkins, who preceded him in death seventeen years ago. Mr.McKinney expressed the wish that his body rest beside that of his son, Stratton, who died three and a half years ago, therefore he was brought here from Alabama that his wish be fulfilled. Mr.McKinney is survived by two children, Katherine and Ewell, who make their home here with their grandmother, Mrs.Blanche Wilkins; two brothers, William and J.T.McKinmey of Memphis; three sisters, Mrs.Will Allen of Marvell, Mrs.James Jeffries of Ripley, Miss., and Mrs.R.L.Dowdle of Roanoke, Alabama. It was at Mrs.Dowdle's home that Mr.McKinney passed away and after having given him every attention, she was broken hearted when death came, as they had been a very devoted brother and sister. 07/07/27 McKINNEY BETTY MRS WILKINS 1910 Unknown Wife of John E.McKinney 07/07/27 McKINNEY JAMES STRATTON 1905 1 1 1924 CITY Son of John E.McKinney 07/21/27 ROWLAND THOMAS JEFFERSON SR 3 21 1847 7 17 1927 CITY T.J.Rowland Sr., passed away at his home on South Rosser Street, Sunday, July 17,1927, shortly before 9 o'clock at the age of 80 years. He lost his sight five years ago, and had been an invalid practically all the intervening time. Realizing that his advanced years held out little hope of recovery, he often expressed his readiness to pass into the heavenly home that awaited him. He was received into the Methodist church under the pastorate of Rev.W.V.Womack. Mr.Rowland was born in Tennessee, but came to Eastern Arkansas when a child, living in Haynes until twenty three years ago, since which time he has made Forrest City his home. He is survived by his wife, Samuel? age 46 in 1910 census, and the following children: Oliver and Tom J.Rowland, Jr., Mrs.D.E.Hoshall and Mrs.B.F.Hardison, the latter of Ridgely, Tenn. All were present at the funeral services held Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev.Chas.Franklin and Blount F.Davidson. The services were attended by a large number of friends from Forrest City, Wynne and Haynes, and the many floral offerings covered the grave-lot. Victor passed away in a Memphis hospital where he was carried Thursday afternoon for treatment for spinal meningitis. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, with interment in the Hughes family plot in a Memphis cemetery. 07/21/27 WILLIAMS D. J. DR UNK 7 14 1927 CHICAGO Dr.D.J.Williams, who formerly practiced medicine in Forrest City, but who more recently was residing in Chicago, died Thursday morning at the residence of his sister, L.S.Bryant, on W.Davis Street. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 24th at the colored First Baptist Church. 07/28/27 LEWIS CHARLES 1862 7 21 1927 MEMPHIS Charles Lewis, aged 65, a resident of Forrest City for the past fifty years, passed away at the Edgewater Beach Hotel, Chicago, last Thursday night, July 21, 1927. He had been in declining health for several years, never fully recovering from an attack of influenza several years ago. The past eight or ten months had been spent primarily in Memphis hotels and hospitals, with only a few occasional visits home. He had been in Chicago only a few days, and was in Forrest City for the last time a few weeks ago. Friends here realized that the end was approaching, but it came earlier than expected, as he was able to be up and around the streets the last few days spent here. Announcement of his death was reported in Forrest City Thursday night with surprise. The remains arrived in Memphis Sunday morning, and funeral services were held in the J.W.Norris Funeral Home, conducted by Mr.Alager, acting for Rabbi Ettleson at the grave side in the Jewish cemetery by the Memphis Chapter of the Masons. The services were attended by hundreds of friends in Memphis and a large number who went over from Forrest City. Mr.Lewis was one of the pioneer developers of Forrest City, and amassed considerable wealth, a large part of which was invested in improved property in Forrest City and farm lands in St.Francis county. In early manhood, he associated himself with his brother-in-law, A.Becker, and they formed the firm Becker & Lewis and conducted a general store for a long number of years. A short time before the death of Mr.Becker in 1916, the store had practically withdrawn from general merchandising and furnishing, and consentrated on furniture. The store was discontinued following Mr.Becker's death, but Lewis continued under the firm name as a cotton buyer and merchandise broker. He was one of the original investors in the Bank of Eastern Arkansas, and was a director and vice president at the time of his death. She died during childbirth, daughter of Mr.J.W.Shepherd and Mrs. Edna Williams Shepherd, born in Tennessee per death certificate. 08/11/27 BOWLES KENT DONALD 9 16 1922 8 6 1927 TENNESSEE Sympathy is extended to the family of Mr.and Mrs.N.T. and Edith (Travis) Bowles, popular and efficient telegraph operator for the Rock Island at Goodwin, in their hour of sorrow in the loss of their little son, who was stricken with meningitis post diphtheria a few days ago, and was taken to a Memphis hospital where he succumbed to the disease. The remains were taken to Camden, Tenn., and laid to rest amid a host of sorrowing friends. She had been at his bedside for several weeks. 08/18/27 McCRARY GROVER MILUS 2 10 1890 8 14 1927 CITY Grover McCrary, a native of Forrest City and the son of Mr.and Mrs.M.R.McCrary died Sunday, Aug.14,1927, at Vicksburg, Miss. The remains were brought to Forrest City and funeral services held in the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev.J.C.Mason, followed by interment in Forrest City cemetery. Grover McCrary was born in Forrest City 37 years ago, and lived here until his early manhood, going to Memphis where he married, and to that union was born one child, a daughter. From Memphis he moved to Jackson, then Vicksburg, Miss. where he was manager of Delta Ice & Coal Company until he started his own business, Vicksburg Auto Sanitarium. Besides his parents, wife, of Vicksburg, and daughter, Fred Beckah McCrary of Memphis, are surviving him three brothers and six sisters. He died from complications of Bright's Disease having been ill for several months. His father and daughter were with him several days before his death., all having been done that devotion could offer. 08/18/27 BREEN J. D. Mrs.Wilkins had been ill only about two hours, and her death came as a surprise and shock to member of her family. Mrs.Wilkins died at the age of 75 years. She was born in Nashville, Tenn., and came to Forrest City to make her home about 12 years ago. Hers was a quiet and unassuming character, loved by her family and esteemed by her many friends. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs.Mallon Folbre and Mrs.Harry Thomas of this city; two sisters, Mrs.James Jenkins of Miami, Fla., and Mrs.Jennie Wilkins of Arkabutla, Miss.; two grand children, Ewell and Katherine McKinney, who made their home with their grand mother. Mr.Batts' death came very suddenly and while he was engaged as veterinarian on the Magness farm tow miles northwest of Forrest City. The deceased was born on Feb.15,1877 in Limetone Co., Alabama, and came to Forrest City in 1890, and had been a resident of Madison township since that time. Mr.Batts is survived by his widow, Mrs.Alma Myers Batts; two sons, J.B.and E.B.Batts; one daughter, Alice Batts; three brothers, T.R., G.M. Batts of this county, and J.C.Batts of Athens, Alabama. MRS ELDRIDGE 8 7 1849 10 5 1927 LOUGHRIDGE Mrs.Sarah E.Eldridge Fitzpatrick died Wednesday night, Oct.5,1927, of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs.Garnett Prewett. Mrs.Fitzpatrick's death was not unexpected, but came nevertheless as a great sorrow to her family. She had been ill for about seven years, and was practically confined to her bed for the past two years. Mrs.Fitzpatrick was born Aug.7,1849, and was reared in the county near Newcastle. She was the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.J.M.Eldridge, pioneer St.Francis County settlers. She was married on Apr.10,1872 to Thomas O.Fitzpatrick, and the first three years of their marriage was spent at Wittsburg, then the seat of Cross county, where Mr.Fitzpatrick was in business and editor of the Wittsburg Gazette. At the end of that time, Mr.and Mrs.Fitzpatrick came to the old home near Newcastle, where their children were born and reared, and where she has since made her home. Mrs.Fitzpatrick is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs.L.G.Landon of Windfall, Indiana, and Mrs.Garnett Prewett of Forrest City; two sons, Ernest Fitzpatrick of Chicago, Illinois, Lee Fitzpatrick of Colt, and nine grand children. Funeral services were conducted Sunday from Mrs.Prewett's home by Rev.Roberson, pastor of the Methodist church at Colt, and Rev.Wright of Widener. Interment was in the old Loughridge cemetery near Newcastle, where all of the deceased members of the family are interred. Mrs.Landon was in attendance at the funeral of her mother. The passing of Mrs.Fitzpatrick decreases the number of the few remaining early settlers of this county. The body of Mrs.Laura P.Davidson, 41, who died Monday afternoon, Oct.24,1927, was sent to Trenton, Tenn., Tuesday afternoon for burial at Salem Cemetery Wednesday morning. Mrs.Davidson was the wife of A.Hall Davidson of Hughes, Ark. She entered the hospital last Thursday to undergo a major operation. UNK 10 26 1927 Unknown On Wednesday morning, Oct.26,1927, S.F.Anderson, driver for the Vaccaro-Grobmyer Co. was killed. Anderson was hauling hay from a car to the barn of H.A.Knight, Jr., and in some manner, at the Knight place, he fell off the wagon and was killed. There were 35 bales of hay on the truck, but only two fell off, and it is not clear as to just exactly he was killed, other than accidentally. He had been employed as driver for a long number of years, was a trusted and reliable man. 11/03/27 CRISP J. JOHN 1870 10 31 1927 HUGHES J.J.Crisp, a highly respected and substantial citizen of the Caldwell community, was killed Monday, Oct.31,1927, when he was thrown from a gravel wagon hauling from the pit on his farm. The team of mules became frightened and Mrs.Crisp was unable to control them. His death is deeply deplored by a wide circle of friends. He was united in marriage to Miss Alice Summerville, and this union was blessed with three children, Thos.S.Pettus, Mrs.Myron Lewis Morley (Mary Joe), and Mrs.J.E.Ferguson (Mabel), the three children surviving him; their mother preceding him in death about thirty years ago. He engaged in insurance, real estate in this area until his health failed, and he sold to Mr.J.E.Ferguson a few years ago. He also was engaged in farming on an extensive scale, owning with his brother, H.E.Pettus a fine plantation of seven hundred acres near Rawlison. He is also survived by two brothers, R.L. and H.E. of this city; and two sisters, Miss Lillie E.Pettus of Forrest City, and Mrs.Annie Sheaf of Ft.Worth, Texas. Although in ill health for many months, she only had been confined to her bed since Thursday night of last week. Her death came much earlier than expected by the family and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Church of the Good Shepherd conducted by her pastor, Rev.Myron Lewis Morley assisted by Rev.J.E.McJunkin. Interment was in the Forrest City cemetery, along side of her husband, Louis Rollwage who preceded her in death 22 years ago. Mrs.Garrison before her marriage was Miss Anna Mae Delano, daughter of Mr.and Mrs.W.A.Delano. She was born and reared in this city, and took a prominent part in the work of the young people of the Methodist church. Her death came quite unexpectedly, as, while she had not been well, her illness had not been considered as of so serious a nature. Surviving Mrs.Garrison are her husband, her parents, Mr.and Mrs.W.A.Delano; sister, Miss Louise Delano; two brothers, Leo of this city, and Roscoe of Memphis. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev.Blount F.Davidson. Interment was in the Forrest City cemetery. Pall bearers were:Active:Norman Humphrey, W.W.Campbell, H.W.Gregory, James Fussell, C.W.Norton, and R.E.Hudson. Honorary: G.M.Dooley, J.D.McDougal, W.L.Lawrence, M.B.Norfleet, Linn Turley, Walter Allen, Fenner Eldridge, Henry Waterman, J.M.Campbell, E.L.Borden and E.L.Simmons. The deceased was born in St.Francis county on Nov.22,1873, and was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Carr on Mar.25,1893. This union was blessed with two children, a son, Loyd, and a daughter, Allie, who survive him. He is also survived by four brothers, W.B., T.J., S.T., and Joe Neill, all of this county. J.H.Neill moved into Forrest City in 1909 to engage in the blacksmith business until about two years ago, when ill health caused his retirement. He was a man of integrity, loved and respected for his character. Mr.Neill underwent an operation for cancer, on Oct.14,1926. This followed by a slight improvement, and early this year, some hopes were entertained that he might be restored to health, but the improvement was only temporary. Three weeks ago, he felt the end was fast approaching, and outlined his funeral arrangements. A Christian man, death had no fear for him. 11/17/27 BATEMAN STELLA MAE MRS BRYAN 3 1 1896 11 14 1927 BATEMAN Mrs.Henry Bateman, age 31, died at her home in Clarendon Monday morning, Nov.14,1927, of uremic poisoning. Mrs.Bateman had been in the Baptist hospital in Memphis for about a month, and with her husband drove home Sunday to spend a week with her children. Mrs.Clark will be remembered here as the daughter of Dr.and Mrs.Smale, who were residents of Forrest City a number of years ago. 11/24/27 RITCHIE CARRE MRS JETT 4 10 1860 11 18 1927 CITY After a long illness the past several months of which she was confined to her bed, Mrs.Carre Jett Ritchie died Friday night, Nov.18,1927, at the home of her daughter, Mrs.R.C.Eldridge, on North Rosser Street. Mrs.Ritchie was born In Carrolton, Ky., on April 10,1860, the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.R.T.Jett. Thirty-three years later she left Carrolton to live in Gregory with her parents. Mrs.Ritchie's husband, preceded her in death 39 years ago last June and for the past twelve years she has made her home with her daughter, where she passed away. Mrs.Ritchie possessed a jovial character, always seeing the bright side of life and enjoying every minute of it. Previous in the beginning of her illness, she was in excellent and pristine health, and was always spoken of as a fine looking woman for her years. On Nov.1 of this year, Mrs.Ritchie's sister, Mrs.James Snodgrass, died at her home in Indianapolis, Ind., of the same malady as Mrs.Ritchie died. The deceased is survived by her daughter, Mrs.R.C.Eldridge, one son, Dr.P.J.Ritchie of Phoenix, Arizona, and one brother, Bert Jett of Gregory. She had been living in Chicago and went to Kansas City to visit her sister who was spending the winter there. She registered at the hotel for the night, and was found dead the next day by attendants. It is presumed she died of heart failure, her burial was in Kansas City. 12/01/27 WINFIELD JOHN OLIVER 1869 11 1927 MT.VERNON John Winfield passed away about midnight at the Winfield home in the city. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the residence, conducted by Rev.Myron L.Morley, followed by interment in the family plot at Mt.Vernon cemetery. Pall bearers were as follows:Dr.E.J.Kyle, H.A.Knight, E.P.Taylor, Dr.H.R.Clark, Homer Folbre, and R.J.Lanier. Deceased had been a sufferer since 1921 from cancer of the throat, and had realized for some time the end was fast approaching. He had only recently returned from St.Louis, to consult specialists at the Rockefeller Foundation, and in its earliest stages was treated at Memphis hospitals. He was a native of LaGrange, Tenn., but came to Forrest City when a child, and has resided here since that time. He was a kindly man, well liked and respected by his associates, was a member of the Woodmen of the World, and until stricken with the malady that finally claimed him, had been a valuable employee of the Rock Island lines. His father, W.W.Winfield, died in early boyhood, and his mother, Mrs.Mary E.Winfield passed away in this city in 1923. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs.Gladys Williams of Widener; one brother, R.H.Winfield; and two sisters, the Misses Fannie and Nannie Winfield, who have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. 12/01/27 DOOLEY RHODA HELEN MRS JOHNSON 7 27 1851 11 29 1927 CITY Mrs.H.P.Dooley, 77, one of the oldest citizens of St.Francis County, expired Tuesday, Nov.29,1927, at the family home on Crowley Ridge in the eastern portion of the county, the funeral being solemnized on Wednesday morning, Rev.Charles Franklin conducting the ceremony, and W.E.Stevens & Co. in charge of arrangements. Deceased had suffered long-more than two years and the coming of the grim reaper came to her as a blessing and relief from the pain. For many years she had been a consecrated Christian and was active in church work up to the time she was stricken low by her afflictions. She was a member of the Methodist denomination. For many years Mr.Neely was engaged in business here under the firm name of Neely & Neblett. He moved from here to Wheatley and later to Eutaw, where he had been in business since. MRS UNK 11 28 1927 OKLAHOMA We are in receipt of the news of the death of Mrs.M.L.Bowers which occurred at the Mayo Bros.Hospital in Rochester, Minn., on Nov.28,1927. Mr.and Mrs.Bowers made their home here for about twelve years, during which time Mr.Bowers was in the service of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They left here about six years ago to go to Okla.City, Okla., to make their home, to which point the body was taken and interred. 12/15/27 TURLEY RALPH 1878 12 9 1927 MISSISSIPPI Ralph Turley, well known merchant and planter of Forrest City and Parkin met sudden death last Friday night, Dec.9,1927, when his car skidded on a frozen road near McDonough Crossing, between Wynne and Parkin. The car, a Dodge Cabrolet, skidded, struck the railing of a small bridge, completely overturned and landed in water about four feet deep. Death came from drowning. A car right behind attempted to assist him, but in vain due to the mud and water. Deceased was a partner in the firm Turley & Co. in this city and also of the Parkin Supply Co., being the active manager of the last named company. He was a resident here until moving to Parkin two years ago. Ralph Turley was born in Byahlia, Miss., forty-nine years ago, and his remains were carried to that city for burial, Sunday, accompanied by relatives, friends and business associates. He is survived by two brothers, Linn and C.E.Turley of this city; two sisters, Misses Landon and Glenn Turley; his wife, and four children, Ralph Jr. aged 13; Mary Ann aged 9; Dan aged 7; and Alice May, age a little more than a year old. Mr.Walker is a brother in law of Judge S.H.Mann of this city. 12/22/27 GRANT MOLLIE MRS BROWN 1846 11 23 1927 FAMILY BURIAL GROUNDS Mrs.Mollie Brown Grant departed this life in her home Nov.23,1927, and was interred in the family burying grounds on Thanksgiving afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. Funeral services conducted by Rev.Gardner, Baptist minister. Mrs.Grant was born a few miles from where she died, her father, Ruffin Brown and her mother, who was Miss Susan Cheatem, a niece of General Cheatem of S.Carolina, left soon after their marriage for the West, stopping for a short time near Florence, Alabama. Then went of their way to the then Arkansas Territory and settled near what is now Clay Hill. There were fourteen children in this family, Mrs.Grant being the eleventh child. Mrs.Grant was born in 1846 and was united in marriage to J.H. (Den) Grant of near Haynes. She was the mother of six children, three of whom lived to be grown, and is survived by two children, Willie Grant, and Mrs.Myrtle Hearst, several grand children, one sister, Mrs.Clemmie James and many nieces and nephews; two cousins, W.W.Bryan of Bryansville, and Dr.Brown of Willow Hill.
