Retha Tolise Hughes, age 77, of Caldwell, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at
Methodist Hospital in Memphis. She was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Forrest City, and
was the daughter of Henry Earl Britton and Rosalie May Britton. She lived in
Caldwell most of her life, was the city clerk for Caldwell and was a member of
the Crowley's Ridge Baptist Church. She married Joseph Preston "Joe" Hughes in
1938, and he survives her along with one son, Rev. J. E. Hughes of Forrest City;
one brother, Robert Bransford Britton of Forrest City; three sisters, Ruth
Turner and Gracie Duffel, both of Forrest City and Janie Hughes of Caldwell;
three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at 3 p. m. at the Caldwell Baptist Church with Rev. R. B.
Hoshaw and Rev. W. G. Davis officiating with burial following in Hughes Cemetery
under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
