Jefferson Davis DoB : June, 1895 DoD: 1995 Ref.: 1995008 Funeral services were held Tuesday in Little Rock for Colonel Jefferson Davis Petty (USArmy, Ret.), the husband of the former Margaret Pettus Howard of Forrest City, who survives him. Col. Petty, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in June, was the recipient of many military honors including a Presidential Citation and a Purple Heart awarded at St. Mihiel during World War I. Born in 1895 in Kennett, Missouri, Col. Petty enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1928 and served throughout WWI. He then attended the University of Nebraska, where he waqs a member of the baseball team, and earned the Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He then attended Oficers Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and served in the Civilian Cnservation Corps (CCC) in Arkansas and California, had active duty in Japan during World War II, and afterwards was assigned to Korea with the United National Civil Assistance Command. He retired in 1953 and moved to Arkansas, home of his wife, a onetime Director of Alumni for Lyon College in Batesville. Col. Pettus was a Mason and holds 50 year membership status in three Masonic chapters. Graveside services were held Tuesday morning at the National Cemetery by Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth. Attending were Mrs. Buford (Polly) Jones, her son, Donnie Jones, and other realtives of the Pettus family in East Arkansas. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
