ADAMS Alice Marie Snowden Adams, 90, of El Dorado, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Hudson Nursing Home following a long illness. Born in a log cabin on Sept. 21, 1917, in Lincoln County, Ky., she was the daughter of a skilled carpenter and minister, the Rev. Charles Irvin Snowden and Bertie Fleming Snowden. Alice grew up near Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Prior to her leaving in 1937 for Anderson College in Anderson, Ind., she had taught Sunday School at the age of 12, and became superintendent of Sunday School at age 16 in a church with a membership of 500. She traveled with her brother, Roscoe, singing in various churches. She was a sharp fashion designer and dresser, and worked for a major Louisville department store. Through the years she directed school and church choirs, worked with children and directed plays. Before her retirement she was an interior design consultant in Sarasota, Fla. Alice was a homemaker, an excellent seamstress and a devoted mother and a creative minister's wife. She co-pastored with her husband of 69 years, the Rev. Robert Alex Adams, in the states of Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama. She was a lifelong member of the Women of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth Snowden Watts, all of Kentucky; and great-granddaughter Avery Brooke Markovich of Indiana. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert Alex Adams of El Dorado; a brother, the Rev. Roscoe Snowden of Anderson; and three children, Robert Allen Adams and his wife, Ruth Fraysur Adams, of Henderson, Nev., a daughter, Marilyn Sue Grubbs and her husband, Perry, of Okolona, Miss., and a son, Charles Douglas Adams of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Frances Marie Adams Almeido and her husband, Patrick, of Henderson, Reagan Scott Grubbs and his wife, Andrea, of Anderson, Aleesha Quay Grubbs Ball and her husband, William Hudson Ball III, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Alexander Snowden Sterling Grubbs of Lake Wales, Fla. There are five surviving great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one nephew, Joe Snowden and his wife, Jane, of Clearwater, Fla.; and three nieces, Pat Watts of Lexington, Ky., Kay Watts of Casselberry, Fla., and Juanita Watts Walker and her husband, Richard, of Granville, Ohio. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at First Church of God with the Rev. Dalyn Helbling, former pastor, officiating. GREEN Diana Kay Miller Green, 50, of El Dorado, died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at her home in Plumerville. She was born on April 1, 1957, in El Dorado to Billy Joe Miller, Sr. and Lillis Ann Sellers Young. She was a housewife who loved her family, her special pets Little "D" and Bambi, cooking and fishing. Preceding her in death were her mother; nephews Jarrell and Edwin Parker; and a niece, Kimberly Miller. Survivors include her husband, Jay M. HARRIS Woodrow Wilson "Pete" Harris, 91, of Huttig, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado following a long illness. Born on Sept. 3, 1916, in Clair, Miss., he was the son of James Edward and Alice Elizabeth Harrison Harris. He was of the Baptist faith and had a kind and generous heart. Woodrow worked as a farmer in his early life. He learned how to weld during the World War II and worked in the shipyards in Mobile, Ala., and Bremerton, Wash. After the war he worked in sawmills as a welder in Crossett and later Huttig, retiring from Riverwood International in Huttig. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and carpentry. Woodrow was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Grady and Victor Harris; a daughter, Linnie Kimbrough; an infant son, John Edward Harris; a grandson, Jonathan Beeson; and his wife of 71 years, Floy Harrington Harris. Survivors are daughters Elowese Walker of El Dorado and Carol Pill of Huttig; a sister, Estelle Edwards of Danville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Michael and Kevin Walker, Debbie Baker, Ramona Justice, Mary White, John Edward Beeson, Teresa Millican and Cheryl Dougherty; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. PICKERING John William Pickering, 87, of Snyder, Texas, died on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, in Claremore, Okla. John was born in El Dorado on Feb. 28, 1920. He served his country in the Pacific Theater during World II as a navigator aboard a C46 aircraft and was discharged as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945. John then began his career with Lion Oil Co., and moved to Snyder in 1950 to help establish the Diamond "M" Gas Plant. He retired as the Monsanto plant manager in 1982. He was a member of Union Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for many years. He volunteered at the senior center. He is survived by his wife, Velma (Bauldree) Pickering; daughters Julia Ann Jones of San Antonio, Texas, Susan Coats of Oklahoma City and Cindy Bissett of Claremore; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sarah Cameron of Parkers Chapel; and two brothers, Chuck of Altharetta, Ga., and James of Mayflower, Ark. Eleanor retired as an elementary school teacher from the Smackover School District. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Union County Retired Teachers Association. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church. Eleanor was a Baptist pastor's wife and provided many ministries in different churches. She served as choir director, pianist, organist, youth director, Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. She was a beloved mother and wonderful role model who loved people unconditionally. Upon her retirement from teaching, she followed her love of traveling and visited many wonderful places in Europe including the British Isle, as well as family and friends. He attended Arkansas A&M College for two years and was a 1941 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He served as a pilot and instructor in the Eastern Flying Command division of the U.S. Army Corp., stationed at Moultrie, Ga., until the end of World War II. He worked at Sam Dixon Hardwood Flooring Co. and Bradley Lumber Co. and founded Wilson Oak Flooring and Sykes Flooring Co. He served as past president of the American Parquet Association for 17 years. He was past member and president of the Warren Rotary Club, a recipient of the Bradley County Citizen of the Year Award, a founding member and past president of the Warren Country Club, a member of the First United Methodist Church, and past chairman of the administrative board of the church. He was director of Warren Bank and Trust Co. for 30 years. He served a 10-year term on the University of Arkansas board of trustees with two years as chairman. He was named honorary citizen of Fayetteville and presented a key to the city. He served as director of the University of Arkansas Foundation for 10 years, and was also a member of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center Board. In 1993, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the Razorback Foundation. In 1995, he received the University of Arkansas at Monticello Alumni Award for Achievement and Merit. He served as a director for the Cotton Bowl Association for five years, and was awarded the Chancellors Award from University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock. The son of Flynn Barnes Sr. and Pearlene Williams Barnes, he was born March 4, 1951, in El Dorado. He was employed as a machine operator at Polyethylene Containers, Inc. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, president of the Layman, and Sunday School superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patsy Jean Barnes. Survivors include one son, Flynn J. Barnes III of Jacksonville, N.C.; two daughters, Tracy L. Barnes and Kenya D. BORNMANN Lois Clanton Bornmann, 91, of Magnolia, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Life Touch Hospice House in El Dorado. She was born Jan. 6, 1917, in Columbia County, to Hugh Massey and Pearl (Hicks) Clanton, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Magnolia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, T.W. Bornmann; two brothers, Eugene and John Roy Clanton; and three sisters, Bernice Wallace, Lucille Myers, and Hazel Wynns. He was born Jan. 5, 1931, in El Dorado to William Edward Hickman and Lucille Lawton Hickman. He was a sergeant in the National Guard for nine years of service and an area superintendent at Lion Oil Refinery Co. He was a dedicated family man, loved fishing and the Razorbacks and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William E. and William L. Hickman; sister, Molly Dean Hickman; and a grandson, Micah Andrew Hickman.
