Mr. Gray was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Tioga, Texas, to John Coleman and Sarah Elizabeth Harrison Gray. He was a registered geologist number 13 in the state of Arkansas; came to El Dorado for Lion Oil Company in 1953; chief geologist for Munoco Co.; became an Independent Consultant in 1970; served as director of United Nations Agency, UNITAR, in Rome, Italy, from 1984-85; leader of first delegation to USSR, People to People in 1990; and to Australia in 1989; commissioner of Arkansas Geological Commission' member of Rotary International; Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientist's American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Nepal Geological Services (Lifetime Membership), First United Methodist Church and Choir member. Achievements include discovery of several oil fields and other valuable mineral deposits which included the largest world deposit of bromine in Russia. He received the 1992 AAPG Distinguished Service Award in Recognition of his 44 years as a geologist and humanitarian dedicated to geology and love for all peoples of the world. Survivors include his wife, Cora; a daughter, Melaine Elizabeth of Yorba Linda, California; and a son, John Jr. of Arkadelphia Human Development Center. Services are 2 p.m. today, at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Young's Funeral Directors. Interment is 10 a.m. Friday at New Rose Hill Memorial Park, Fort Worth, Texas.
