FROM EL DORADO (Union County) NEWS-TIMES, EL DORADO, ARKANSAS JUNE 8,1988 Ellis A. Whitten, 91, of 507 E. Hillsboro, died Tuesday in a local nursing home. He was born March 21, 1897, in Laneburg, the son of William Riley and Elnora Hill Whitten. He was a retired senior operator for Monsanto Chemical Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a 1924 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He was affiliated with Union County Schools from 1925 to 1942 and served as coach, principal and superintendent. Under his coaching, several teams won state championships. Whitten was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of El Dorado Masonic Lodge No. 13, F&AM. He was a member of the Veterans of World War I, El Dorado Barracks, and served as local, state, and regional commander. He was a veteran of World War I-U. S. Army, a member of Woodsmen of the World, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2413, a charter member of the El Dorado Senior Citizens Club, which he served as president for over 20 years, and was a member and organizer of the El Dorado Unit of RSVP. He had been a resident of Union County since 1925. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clayte Holloway Whitten of El Dorado; a daughter, Mrs. John W. "Elizabeth" Meux of Wichita Falls, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Young's Chapel with the Rev. David Prothro officiating. Burial will follow in Willisville Methodist Cemetery between Waldo and Rosston on Arkansas 19 under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
