"Black Oak Cemetery named to historic register" Printed in The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas (http://www.mornews.com) on Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Submitted by Bert Edens - chigger@iso.net -------------------------------------------------- Black Oak Cemetery at Greenland has been named to the National Register of Historic Places, according to a news release from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. The register is the country's official list of historically significant properties. Black Oak Cemetery is on County Road 243 on the west side of Greenland. It is a 3-acre hilltop cemetery containing some 300 graves from about 1843 to the mid-1930's. The nomination of the cemetery said it is significant as "an important reminder of pioneer life in Washington County and a link for families still residing in the county." "The cemetery contains the graves of John Alexander, first territorial representative of the county of Washington, descendants of several early area families and the foundation of the Black Oak school," the nomination said. The Black Oak Cemetery is a testament to the varied lives of Washington County community members," it said. "Their roles as merchants, soldiers, statesmen and homesteaders in early Arkansas can be remembered within the grounds of Black Oak Cemetery." Also listed on the National Register were the First Baptist Church at Eudora, Hamilton Apartments at West Memphis, the Giboney-Robertson-Stewart House at Wynne, the W.E. O'Bryant Bell Tower at Pine Bluff, the P.D. Burton House at Lewisville, the Dr. E.F. Utley House at Cabot, the Captian John T. Burkett House at Frenchport, the Elks Lodge at Mena, the Harris House and Lamb-McSwain House, both at Little Rock, Noricks Chapel School near Mountain Home, and the First Presbyterian-Berry House at Dardanelle.
