All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgenwebarchives.org *********************************************** Rogers Democrat 100 Years Ago June 30, 1898 Corporal Garland Owenby, of Springdale, a member of Company F., First Arkansas Regiment, was in Rogers on Monday recruiting. he informed a Democrat reporter that he secured 24 recruits at Springdale. The names of the following Rogers boys were also secured: W.A. Lee, J.L. Tuck, F.M. Hanna, John Miner, W.T. Kiser, Geo. Curry, and L.H. Benedict. The boys did not have to go to Little Rock but will be examined and sworn in at Springdale. Owenby reports that the boys are getting along nicely at Chickamauga and there is but little kicking. he says King makes a good teamster and Joe McClain is all right when it comes to cooking. Joe gets the regular soldier wages from the government, but each fellow in the company gives him 25 cents a month so he makes quite a nice thing out of it... Prof. J.W. Scroggs this week made a proposition to those parties who signed the petition for his removal as principal of Rogers Academy, offering to resign his position if the above parties would raise for the use and benefit of the Academy the sum of $1,000. The proposition was presented on the 27th and the limit of time of acceptance was placed at the noon of June 30, 1898... By mutual agreement the business houses of Rogers will close Saturday night July 2nd and open no more until Tuesday morning. Business being suspended on account of the grand and glorious Fourth... Siloam Springs now has its water works and electric lights in running order... We have this week received report of the work of United States Marshal Stahl, of the Western Arkansas district, for the year ending June 8, 1898. The following is the list of crime for which 205 persons were committed to jail from this district or held on bond to await the action of the United States court: Selling whisky without a license; 84; making moonshine whisky, 68; counterfeiting, 14; cutting government timber, 21; robbing postoffice, 3; robbing mails, 3; breaking into gov. warehouse, 3; perjury, 2; violating pension law, 1; violating postal law, 1; embezzling pension money, 1; embezzling postoffice funds, 1; obstructing process, 1; larceny, 1; making false certificate, 1. The total number of stills he destroyed was 52; total amount of liquor destroyed, 26,375 gallons. Total court expenses for the year, $116,000. Of the 205 persons mentioned above, 25 were from Benton county. Most of them were arrested for moonshining and selling whiskey...
