A series of public hearings in connection with Beaver Lake land condemnation suits is being held this week at the Rogers City Hall... The second major project in the development of the Rogers Municipal Airport was a step nearer realization today following acceptance of a $27,000 matching fund grant, for the construction of a taxi-way at the airport, according to C. Jimmie Carter, airport commission chairman... Jack C. Deason, past president of the Rogers unit of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, received an award by the National Junior Chamber of Commerce at the 43rd annual meeting in Louisville, Ky. Deason was honored for "individual service, participation, organization, knowledge and enthusiasm"... An ordinance placing the city of Rogers and its regular employees under the municipal division of the Arkansas State Employees Retirement System was passed by a unanimous vote of the Rogers City Council... The Post Office Department put into effect today its program to give every mailing address a number. The new system is called "ZIP code" and is designed to help speed mail deliveries... Johnny lester unleashed a pair of 82s to capture top spot in the Rogers Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament, held at the Twin City Golf Course... Rogers Daily News 50 Years Ago June 27-July 3, 1948 Air transportation of baby chick to supply Northwest Arkansas broiler growers, which has become more or less commonplace during recent months, will be stepped up this week, with more than 100,000 chicks scheduled to be landed during the week at the Rogers airport... The bodies of three Benton service men, who lost their lives in the European theatre, are among the 3,734 American war dead being returned to the United States from Europe aboard the army transport Greenville Victory, the American graves registration service announced. The Benton countians are Second Lt. James K. Byrd of Rogers, Pvt. Robert P. Hardcastle, Gentry, and Pvt. Carl E. Potter, Gentry... Because of the large number of people expected to attend the Fourth of July celebration at the Lake Atalanta Monday, the business expansion committee of the chamber of commerce has decided not to permit parking of automobiles in the park area during the day as a means of avoiding traffic congestion and possible accidents. The committee has arranged, however, to provide free bus transportation... Sid McMath of Hot Springs ended a whirlwind two-day campaign tour of Northwest Arkansas with an address here Tuesday night in which he outlined his position on some of the major issues in the current race for governor of Arkansas... Organization of the Texans of Northwest Arkansas was completed Tuesday night when about 135 former Texans met at Dream Valley ranch for a picnic supper and business meeting... The Bentonville and Gravette high school bands will join the Rogers band in the presentation of the second of a series of concerts to be played at Atalanta park as a feature of Monday's Fourth of July celebration... Rogers Democrat 100 Years Ago June 30, 1898 Corporal Garland Owenby, of Springdale, a member of Company F., First Arkansas Regiment, was in Rogers on Monday recruiting. he informed a Democrat reporter that he secured 24 recruits at Springdale. The names of the following Rogers boys were also secured: W.A. Lee, J.L. Tuck, F.M. Hanna, John Miner, W.T. Kiser, Geo. Curry, and L.H. Benedict. The boys did not have to go to Little Rock but will be examined and sworn in at Springdale. Owenby reports that the boys are getting along nicely at Chickamauga and there is but little kicking. he says King makes a good teamster and Joe McClain is all right when it comes to cooking. Joe gets the regular soldier wages from the government, but each fellow in the company gives him 25 cents a month so he makes quite a nice thing out of it... Prof. J.W. Scroggs this week made a proposition to those parties who signed the petition for his removal as principal of Rogers Academy, offering to resign his position if the above parties would raise for the use and benefit of the Academy the sum of $1,000. The proposition was presented on the 27th and the limit of time of acceptance was placed at the noon of June 30, 1898... By mutual agreement the business houses of Rogers will close Saturday night July 2nd and open no more until Tuesday morning. Business being suspended on account of the grand and glorious Fourth... Siloam Springs now has its water works and electric lights in running order... We have this week received report of the work of United States Marshal Stahl, of the Western Arkansas district, for the year ending June 8, 1898. The following is the list of crime for which 205 persons were committed to jail from this district or held on bond to await the action of the United States court: Selling whisky without a license; 84; making moonshine whisky, 68; counterfeiting, 14; cutting government timber, 21; robbing postoffice, 3; robbing mails, 3; breaking into gov. warehouse, 3; perjury, 2; violating pension law, 1; violating postal law, 1; embezzling pension money, 1; embezzling postoffice funds, 1; obstructing process, 1; larceny, 1; making false certificate, 1. The total number of stills he destroyed was 52; total amount of liquor destroyed, 26,375 gallons. Total court expenses for the year, $116,000. Of the 205 persons mentioned above, 25 were from Benton county. Most of them were arrested for moonshining and selling whiskey... The Springdale News 25 Years Ago June 29, 1973 Friends of the Rev. and mrs. Marvin Hinrichs, 102 S. Westwood Lane, honored them Sunday afternoon at a reception at the Salem Lutheran Fellowship Hall in honor of their silver wedding anniversary. The occasion also marked the Rev. Hinrich's 25th year in the ministry... New White-Way lights were installed on the new stretch of Highway 71 in Springdale from the hill top south of the underpass to Johnson Road... Maxine and Roy Bowman are happy to have her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Eddy, moving to Springdale. Moving from Heavener, Okla., they have purchased a home at 2701 Mida... William J. Cloud hasx resigned as pastor of the First Christian Church and with his family will move next week to Oklahoma where he will return to graduate seminary of Phillips University in Enid... Funeral services for O.A. Kenrick, 71, Springdale resident, who died June 18 at his home following a long illness, were held Saturday afternoon in Callison-Sisco Chapel... Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. Odis Hash, whose marriage was an event of June 18, were honored at a wedding shower Tuesday night in the home of Mrs. and Mrs. Oran Tisdale... Robert Hartzfeld, a native of Chicago, has been added to the staff of the First Baptist Church as minister of music. The Hartzfelds will reside at 1605 Westwood... Claude Allen Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Mills, left by plane from Little Rock June 20 to begin basic training in the Marines... The Springdale News 50 Years Ago July 2, 1948 Mr. and Mrs. Will Cooper, who reside at Rt. 4, were given a surprise dinner Sunday, June 20, by their children in honor of the couple's 44th wedding anniversary. The dinner was on the table and waiting when Mr. and Mrs. Cooper returned home from church... Mr. and Mrs. Joe Backus and sons, Joe, Tom and ohn Cline of Camden, N.J., arrived Monday for a visit with relatives in Springdale and Fayetteville. Mr. Backus is a postal inspector... Charles Tansey is back at work with Long-Bell Lumber Co., after a week's vacation spent fishing... Harold Warren has assumed his new duties as manager of the appliance department for the LP Gas and Equipment Co., here. Warren is well known in Springdale, having been associated with the station KUOA in Siloam Springs in the sales department... Mr. and Mrs. Mace Howell announce the birth of a son June 21... Virginia Lee Pattishall and Lee Hamilton, both of Cave Springs, were married June 19 at the First Baptist Church in Rogers. Rev. Rel Gray read the ceremony... Betty Fields, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Fields of Springdale, will reign as hostess queen of the July 4 annual Rodeo of the Ozarks... The Springdale News 60 Years Ago July 7, 1938 Dr. Friedman Sisco, son of Dr. C.P. Sisco and his wife, arrived home Monday from San Antonio, Texas, where he had served a year's internship in the Santa Rosa Hospital. Dr. Sisco was graduated in the 1937 class from University of Arkansas College of Medicine at Little Rock and will be associated with his father in his office here... Lewis Epley, Linotype operator for the Springdale News, accompanied by Mrs. Epley and little son, Lewis Jr., were guests of relatives at Fort Smith and Greenwood for the past weekend and over July 4... Rev. Paul Cardwell of Dennison, Texas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Cardwell, will arrive Tuesday as instructor at the Methodist Assembly on Mount Sequoyah at Fayetteville... W.C. Gilstrap was honoree at a birthday dinner Wednesday at his home on West Emma Avenue... Sarah Bennett, 85, resident of Washington County for the past 60 years, died Wednesday afternoon at her home after a long illness...
