W. SHERRY -------------------------------------------------------------------------- One by one the early settlers of this county are passing away and within a few more years they will all have been "gathered unto their fathers." It will be well for the rising generation if they shall serve their age as faithfully as did the pioneers who endured all the privations incident to the settlement and building up of a new country. the subject of this sketch was one of the first settlers of this county, having come here away back in 1834, when Arkansas was only a territory. He located a short distance east of the present town of West Fork where he continued to reside until he came, about a year ago, to make his home with his son in Fayetteville. He was born in Greene county, Kentucky, Sept. 24, 1813, when only a child his parents moved to the territory of Indiana, where he grew to manhood. When a young man he came to the State of Illinois where he was married to Miss Delilah Ingram, July 20, 1834. In the fall of the same year this young couple came to this county where they lived to raise a family of thirteen children, only one of these is dead; all the others are good citizens and exemplary members of the church. Early in (life?) the subject of this notice became a christian and united with the Baptist Church. After coming to this county he identified himself with the Christian Church under the preaching of Eld. Harvey Strickland, well and favorably known to all the older settlers. For fifty-five years he lived the life of a christian and when the end came it found him ready. More than a year ago he was prostrated with la grippe from which he never fully recovered. His last sickness, however, was pneumonia, which only continued a few days and terminated in death on Tuesday morning, May 5. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and relatives who came to offer a last tribute of affection to a good man. "Soft be the turf on his tomb. And bright be the place of his soul." R. SUBMITTER'S NOTES: There are a couple of mistakes in this one which I corrected below. They copy I have is torn so I had to guess at one of the words (in parentheses). I'm sure this would have been from the Fayetteville newspaper. (Corrections: Green William Sherry was born Sep. 24, 1813 in WARREN Co., KY. Green's mother Esther Holcomb died in Warren Co. His father William married again before moving to Gibson Co., IN.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------
