ALBERT JARVIS History of Arizona, page 35 Albert Jarvis is a member of one of the old families of northeastern Arizona and has worthily maintained the prestige of the family. He has rendered splendid service as an educator and public official and has merited the esteem in which he is held. He was born in St. Johns, Arizona in 1892 and is a son of Charles B. and Margaret (G. DeFreeze) Jarvis. His father was born in London England on October 3, 1855 and came to the United States in 1871 at the age of sixteen. He located first in Seattle, Washington, but later settled in Utah where he engaged in ranching. In 1880 he came to Arizona and lived for about one and a half years at Snowflake. From there he went to Nutriosa, where he remained but a short time and then engaged in business with Mr. Young, who owned a store just east of Holbrook, maintaining it while the railroad was being built. Mr. Jarvis was employed in that store until 1889 when he came to St. Johns. Here he took up dentistry and later went to work in the stores of the Arizona Cooperative Mercantile Institute. He was employed in the various stores of that organization until 1900 when he went back to England on a mission, being gone two years. On his return home he was a ppointed Deputy County Clerk. On the expiration of his term he was made County Superintendent of Schools and also served several years as United States land Commissioner. During all of these years he was interested laos in farming and stock raising and gave effective aid in the installing of the telephone system in this county , the company being the, as it still is, owned by local capital. Mr. Jarvis had a long and active career crowned with honor, for he had worthily performed every duty that came to him and had shown himself a man of stanch integrity and sterling worth. Albert Jarvis received his educational training in the public schools at St. Johns and the State Normal School at Flagstaff. In 1918 he started teaching school, which profession he followed for six years and then returned to St. Johns, having been appointed Clerk of the Board of County Supervisors in which capacity he is still serving. Mr. Jarvis married Lorana Nelson, who was born at Eagar, Arizona and is a daughter of Edmond and Margaret (Foutz) Nelson. To this union have been born five children: Alwin Thomas, aged twelve years; Wallace Albert, aged eleven years; Phyllis, aged nine years; Nelson Phillip aged eight years and Margaret aged five years. The four oldest children are attending the ST. Johns schools. Mr. Jarvis is a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has shown himself loyal and true in every relation to life and to a marked degree commands the respect of his fellowmen and the esteem of a large circle of loyal friends.
