The Tombstone, Volune 4, No. 2, Fall 1987 Cochise Genealogical Society, Douglas, Ariz. CHARLESTON Charleston had two or three graves for the Howell family, relatives of Viola Howell Slaughter. Several years ago somebody dug up the graves and sold parts of the caskets at a yard sale. The sheriffs office stepped in when somebody reported the headstones being priced for sale. Per Ed Francis, area historian. COURTLAND CEMETERY is located near the ghost town of Courtland, which is on the Pearce Road, some 11 miles south of Pearce and 3 miles north of Gleeson. It is 19 miles south of Tombstone. The cemetery, on land owned by E.Molina, was in use as late as 1918. There are some 85 graves that have not been identifeid and only 4 on which the inscriptions are legible. It was surveyed in the the summer of 1971 by Mrs. John Schwartzmann and Dr. and Mrs. E.B.Jolley. Field, Jr. of Douglas, Arizona. FRIERSON GRAVE SITE This lone grave was discovered by Richard and Donna Austin and family about a mile from the Forest Service gate in Brown Canyon. The latter merges into Ramsey Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains. The grave has a cement wall around a 10 x 10 patch of ground. The wall is only a foot high and a pipe fence is around the cement. The stone is cement and built into the wall with the inscription: W. H. FRIERSON 1855 - 1928. The Tombstone, Vol 6, #1 Spring 1989. HUACHUCA SIDING See Campstone LEAKE CEMETERY This cemetery is located on land homesteaded by the Leake family two years after their arrival in Douglas from Texas on 9 Oct 1902. To reach the cemetery drive north on Kings Highway until you are 1/2 mile past the big dip. Though not on the highway, the cemetery may be seen to the east. It may be approached by turning east onto Leake Road and then south to the home of current owners Karen and David Bond. Inscriptions: Leake, Conrad M. 1890 - 1964. PAXTON GRAVE Four photographs and a letter from Agua Prieta, Sonora, dated 1965 were recently found at the Chamber of Commerce in Douglas.
