Sunnyside Cemetery R 19E, T 24S Section 16. West side of Huachuca Mountains, near the ghost town of Sunnyside. The dimensions of the cemetary are approximately 60 feet wide by 50 feet deep. There are 10 visible gravesites. There could be more but we only saw 11 markers. It appears that the interments began in the back row of the cemetary, probably so that subsequent burials would not require disturbing previous burial sites in order to move further back into the cemetary plots. Nine of the gravesites have identical markers placed by the Carroon Mortuary of Nogales Az. There is one fairly ornate iron cross with no name and one very simple wooden marker for ISIS J wired to the top of what appears to be a shovel or broom handle. The markers from left to right starting in the back row are John Reichart, Tom Duncan, Jacob Bisel, Vincent Langford, Albert Gatrell and Diana Eley Gatrell. The second row from left to right begins with the wooden marker, then Lucy Herrick Langford, Ida Moore and John Merritt whose marker is the only one with dates, 1862 - 1945. John's site also has a stone marker lying flat on the ground indicating his name and Feb 1862 - Apr 1945. The left side of third row contains only the unmarked iron cross. Access to the cemetary is by a 6 foot opening flanked by tall posts which appear to have been split from the same tree trunk. Apparently there was a cross piece of some type spanning the gateway, possibly a sign, which has been removed. The opening begins 11 feet from the left front boundary of the cemetary. All of the gravesites are outlined by small baseball or softball sized rocks, and there are several more rocks of the same size strewn around the cemetary. Maybe some other markers have been removed and the rocks kicked around (speculation on my part), the eleven markers described here are all that are readily discernable. If my idea of the order of burial is correct, then John Merritt was probably the last interment, in 1945. There was enough room at the end of the second row for other burials, but the iron cross is in the third row, but could have been placed at any time.
