Greenway, lieutenant colonel, 101st Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, October 23, 1918. During a terrific enemy shelling on two of his battalions, and after both his battalion commanders had been wounded, Col. Greenway personally directed the activities and greatly encouraged his forces by his presence. Leading them in attack, he demonstrated the utmost valor at the most critical moments, and he was the first of his command to enter the German trench which marked the objective of the day's attack.
