On August 16, Howell was eating a peach when accidentally he swallowed the pit, which lodged in his gullet. From that day until he died he suffered untold agonies from hunger and thirst and gradually wasted away until he was a mere skeleton. He begged for food and when given two him it was ejected immediately. After the man died the surgeons performed an autopsy and removed part of the esophagus. The pit had turned crosswise in its passage to the stomach and the sharp end had penetrated the esophagus, clinging so firmly that it could not be removed.
