Judge Neville was a man possessed of determination and energy in advocating and promoting to the extent of his ability the reforms which he regarded as necessary to the welfare of his country. As a public speaker he was logical and forceful and while at times caustic in public debate, still in private life he was gentle and considerate of his opponents. He came to Arizona from the state of Nebraska where he had ultimate? association with William Jennings Bryan in politices and his admiration and confidence in Mr. Bryan never grew less, and last year he was as earnest and determined in the support of the Nebraskan as he was in 1896 in the state of Nebraska. The death of Judge Neville came when no relative was near, but numbers of friends responded with sympathy and offers of assistance from the time he was stricken on Sunday afternoon unil his spirits flew away from the mortal body yesterday afternoon. Among his intimate associates Judge Neville was always popular; he was inclined to sociability and was a most companionable gentleman and was admired for his splendid ability and uncompromising defence of what he believed to be right at all times and under all circumstances. Arizona Daily Star (Tucson, AZ) Thur Apr 8, 1909 pg 1 WM. NEVILLE ABLE JURIST PASSES AWAY For Five Years He Was Resident of Douglas and Prominent in Politics of Nebraska and Arizona (Special to the Star) DOUGLAS, April 7--Judge Wm Neville died here at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon, following a paralytic stroke Sunday afternoon. The deceased had resided in Douglas for five years, having come west from Nebraska for his health. He served one term in the Arizona legislature, and was at one time a member of congress from Nebraska. Telegrams from a brother in San Diego and a son in Laplatte, Nebraska; disclose that both are ill and request that the body be shipped to Laplatte for interment. The remains will be shipped tomorrow afternoon. The local bar association passed resolutions of respect and condolence. The death of Judge William Neville removes one of the distingquished citizens from Cochise county. Coming to Douglas in 1903 where he hoped to regain his health, he was soon one of the foremost in the upbuilding of the Smelter City. The Irene block on G avenue for which he at one time refused $20,000 in addition to other business and residence property combined to make him one of the largest property owners there. In Cochise county Judge Neville engaged in the practice of his profession and was considered one of the ablest members of the Arizona bar. He served one term in the legislature but aside from that took no active part in politics in this territory. For many years he was one of the most prominent residentts of Nebraska. There he practiced law for many years, was county judge for upwards of fifteen years, was elected to the supreme bench, elected to congress and came within one vote of being elected to the United States senate. His career as a lawyer, judge and statesman was clean and he enjoyed the friendship of many of the leading me in various walks of life. He enjoyed a close and confidential friendship with William Jennings Bryan and returned last fall to stump Nebraska for the Commoner. Judge Neville leaves a son and daughter to mourn his loss. His wife, a woman of rare attainments and splendid personality, died about four years ago and is buried at San Diego. Their old home was North Platte, Neb.
