OWEN PLUMB Cochise Co. Az Arizona Republican Newspaper Feb 5, 1910 Lafayette Plumb received a telegram from Douglas Thursday apprising him of the murder of his nephew, the son of Owen Plumb and the supposedly fatal wounding of Owen himself at the hands of a gang of Mexican woodchoppers. From the meager narrative received here it appears that Owen Plumb drove out into the desert from Douglas to pay off a number of Mexicans who he had employed to chop wood for him. He was accompanied by his father and young son. Arriving at the camp, Owen and his son went off into the brush where the Mexicans were working, leaving Plumb senior behind with the horses and buggy. What could have happened to cause trouble, the latter did not know, but before long he heard the noise of battle, of scuffling and tramping about in the brush. Assuming that something must be wrong he left the team and followed in the way his son and grandson had gone. When he had penetrated the brush to where the men had been working he found Owen apparently just fallen and over him the gang of Mexicans were fighting to kill him with their axes. The boy lay some distance away evidently dead. Before the old man had time to recover from the first shock of horror, one of the Mexicans saw him, and the entire crowd ran to attack him, apparently maddened to the point of animal ferocity. He turned and fled and after a long chase managed to hide until his pursuers were gone.
