JOE RICHARDS August 19, 1897 Arizona Republican Newspaper The examination of Walter Hoffman this afternoon for killing Joe Richards, another cowboy at the Burke place, as already published in the Prospector, was heard before Justice Duncan at the hour set. G.W. Swain represented Hoffman while the prosecution in the absence of District Attorney English was conducted by W.C. Staehle and S.A. D Upton. There were twenty one witnesses and the evidenced adjuced went to show clearly that it was a case of justifible homicide. Several witnesses testified to seeing deceased pull his gun and in words not to be found in the Bible informed Hoffman that his end had come but in the twinkle of an eye and before he could carry his threat into effect he himself was a corpse. The verdict of the coroner's jury was also produced which exonerated Hoffman on the grounds of justifiable homicide.
