GEORGE WALKER Arizona Republican Newspaper November 24, 1895 George Walker, a well known resident of Congress camp, committed suicide at that place Friday night. Walker was a quiet, sober sort of individual and very popular among his acquaintances. He had been residing in Congress about five months and till lately owned a half interest in one of the most thriving saloons of the camp. Though ordinarily abstemious and prudent, about a week ago he started on a drunken spree that ended only with his death. His saloon interest was lost in a gambling game and he finally gambled away everything he owned. Friday he made threats of suicide and about 10 pm in front of Barton's Saloon announced that then and there he would "close the deal" for himself, displaying as he said it, a 38 caliber revolver. Several friends argued with him over his foolishness and the party entered the saloon. Here his friends tried to get him to give up the gun. But instead of handing it to his friend, who stood before him with outstretched hand, Walker quickly placed the revolver to his temple and pulled the trigger. He lingered for ten hours, however, not expiring till about daylight the next morning. The funeral will be today. Walker was a native of Denmark and about 38 years of age. He had been for years a resident of Arizona for the greater portion of the time at Tombstone. before going to Congress he lived for several months in Phoenix, being here in the employ of Dan Cannon in the fruit store next to the Monihon Block.
