Walter Wells Arizona Republican Newspaper September 20, 1895 Coroner Alvord, returned today from the fort where he held an inquest. The name of the dead soldier is Walter Wells, aged 25 years. He was killed at the Riley Ranch and the shooting was done by Merrill Gibbs, a colored soldier. The coroner's jury in their verdict made a charge against Gibbs of the crime of murder in the first degree. Sheriff Fly brought Gibbs over and has his prisoner in jail. The hearing was set in Justice Koska's court for this afternoon but at the stipulated hour the thirteen wirnesses summoned were not present and an attachment was at once issued for their appearance at 2 pm tomorrow.
