J. GUTHERIE SAVAGE March 4, 1898 J. Gutherie Savage of Flagstaff, one of the best known men in the territory died in this city yesterday morning. He had long been in ill health and came here about six weeks ago to spend the winter. The deceased was 59 years old and was a native of Wisconsin. He had been aresident of the territory ever since the founding of Flagstaff and has been prominent in Grand Army temperance and Masonic circles. He took part in the Civil War in 1861 and served three years under that enlistment. He afterward re-enlisted in an engineer's corps with which he was connected for several years. He was a sergeant at the battle of Antetam and when the withering hail of lead and iron had swept the hillside he was the only one of the color guard left alive. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge at Flagstaff and was also an officer of the Grand Lodge at the time of his death. He is survived by a married daughter and he was also related to Rev. S.L. Gutherie of Tempe.
