Sam Wing Arizona Silver Belt December 16, 1896 Sam Wing, a gardner was found dead in the road a short distance north of Robert Stead's early last Saturday morning by Jesse Henderson. Acting Coroner John M. Jones and Sheriff J.H. Thompson repaired to the palce and found the body lying across the road and the dead man's horses and wagon a mile farther north with the two dogs which always accompanied the team. An examination of the body revealed gunshot wounds in the back of the head and neck and tracks behind a catclaw bush at the side of the road showed the assassin had lain in wait for his victim; other tracks indicated that as the wagon passed he had advanced within eight or ten feet and fired the fatal shot. That the murder was not committed for the purpose of robbery was evidenced by the fact tha the body had not been approached and a watch and $10 were found on the person of the dead man. The murderer, after circling about the spot, had returned to the road and toward Globe to within a quarter of a mile north of the Buffalo smelter, where the trail was lost. Sam Wing, whose garden is at Wheatfields, was on his way home, having left Globe about 7:30 on Friday evening and the killing must have ocucrred about half past eight o'clock or later. Deceased had been a resident of Globe for 17 or 18 years and was an industrious and peaceable man. He was buried on Sunday afternoon with the customery Chinese rites--the clothing he had worn was burned on the grave and refereshments were provided to sustain him until the crossed the River Styx. On Monday last, Sheriff Thompson arrested Foo Pete, a Chinaman who had formerly been a partner of the dead man and against whom incriminating evidence is said to have been obained that he is the assassin.
