We are informed that this inhuman monster left her in a hut near the foot of Mt. Graham, from which the nearest water was half a mile distance and just one dollar and a couple of goats for herself and children to subsist upon, and he has never been heard of since. She remained at this place for several weeks until she was nearly starved when J. D. Hartzler and Chas. Francis learned of her condition and brought her to Safford, where she could receive medical treatment. She has been in a precarious condition ever since she was brought here, and on the 25th of last month her baby was bron, and last Tuesday she passed away. During her illness she was in constant fear that Thompson would return and do her bodily harm for allowing the condition he left her in to be known, and on her death bed requested that, should he return, none of her children be given to him. We think, however, that he will not return to claim them, for if he should the treatment he deserves will no doubt be meted out to him. Mrs. Thompson was 24 years of age; she did not know where any of her relatives were except one step-daughter, from whom she received a letter a few days before her death stating that Thompson was in Deming. The funeral was held the same day she died, which was largely attended. The funeral services were read by Wm. Place, and her remains were interred in the Safford Burial ground. Dr. Reed who had been attending her, and Mr. and Mrs. Glass, as soon as Mrs. Thompson died took charge of the children. Numerous families asked the privilege of taking charge of the children and the following ladies each took one to her home: Mrs. Peter Anderson, Mrs. Rollins, Mrs. Wm. Packer, Mrs. Hans Jorgenson and Mrs.Stukey. Men like the fellow Thompson should be shuned as a leper would be. There is no reason assigned for his treatment of his wife; he was making a fairly good living peddling meat in this and adjoining towns when he deserted her, and her death was caused from his neglect.
