JOHN MILLER September 2, 1897 Arizona Republican Newspaper In the month of December 1895, John Miller, a well known prospector and miner disappeared from Morenci, where he had lived for several years. Mr. Miller left home one morning with the intention of going to Gold Gulch to do some assessment work for Mr. I. Knapp, who was then at Globe. He took his Winchester with him and that was the last time any of his friends saw him alive. His disappearance occurred only a few days prior to the killing of Pablo Salcido by A. Chaco and his band of robbers and murderers. Foul play was suspected by Miller's friends as some tough characters in Morenci he was by no means a favorite with who had been stealing horses, robbing dwellings, etc. One of the men killed in the fight with the officers at the same time Salcido lost his life had Miller's rifle and this strenthened the theory of Miller's death. Last March a grave was found on Eagle Creek six miles from Morenci. The other day it was opened and the body was identified as that of Miller.
