J.R. Brought Arizona, The Youngest State, 1913, pg 337 Among the well known and popular business men of Phoenix is J.R. Brought, the owner of the Coliseum Theater, one of the foremost places of entertainment in the city. Born in New York in 1866 he was educated in the public schools and went west to Nebraska in 1880 when but fourteen years of age and subsequently working in Wyoming and Montana. He finally landed in California where he owned a stock ranch for some time, thence removing to New Mexico where he conducted a similar enterprise near Albuquerque. For several years he traveled selling adding machine, typewriters and safes. In 1909 he came to Phoenix and built the Savoy Theater, operating it until 1915. He then took over the Coliseum which has a seating capacity of one thousand, is well appointed and furnished and Mr. Brought always sees to it that the entertainment is of a high class and worthy of attendance.
