EDWARD PATRICK CARR History of Arizona page 69 Edward P. Carr of Tempe, is regarded as the leading funeral director in his district where he has been engaged in the undertaking business for many years, and has enjoyed a very satisfactory measure of success. Mr. Carr was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire, on the 2nd of November 1879 and is a son of John and Bridget (McCaffrey) Carr, both of whom are deceased. His father, who was born in Canada, was a stonecutter by trade and enjoyed a large business as a contractor. To him and his wife were born ten children, six of whom are living. Edward P. Carr received his educational training in the public schools of New Hampshire and Connecticut and in 1898 when nineteen years of age, came to Tempe, Arizona. Following the Spanish-American War and during the Philippine campaign and the Boxer uprising he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in which he served four years, during which period he was attached to the hospital service. On being honorably discharged from the navy Mr. Carr returned to Tempe and entered the employ of J.J. Hodnet, undertaker with whom he remained for three years. He then engaged in that business on his own account and during the subsequent years has built up a large practice and gained a reputation as a competent and reliable mortician. He has a well equipped and nicely furnished establishment and his methods have been such as have gained for him the respect and confidence of the people of this locality. In 1905 Mr. Carr was united in marriage to Margaret G. Ward, who is a native of California and they are the parents of three children: Edward P., Jr. who is a graduate of Tempe High School and Tempe State Teachers College, is now associated with his father in the undertaking business; Margaret C., who is a teacher and Lawrence, eleven years old, who is attending school. In his political views Mr. Carr is a staunch republican and has shown a good citizen's interest in the welfare of his community. He served for eight years as a Justice of the Peace, in which capacity he rendered a type pf service which received the commendation of his fellowmen. He is a member and past president of the Tempe Civic Club and a present member of its executive committee and is president of the Tempe Beach Association. He is also a member of the Arizona Funeral Directors Association. He has shown himself a man among men, exhibiting those qualities so desirable in well ordered society and no resident of this city commands to a greater degree than he the respect and good will of the people.
