A.H. OWEN Az. Republican Newspaper Nov 9, 1893 H.A. Owen, commonly known as "Black Jack" a character of world wide reputation and known to every old timer in Arizona, as a partner with Jackson McCrackin in the famous McCracken Mine, that was sold some years ago for a quarter of a million dollars is again in luck. After the expenses of the sale were paid, Black Jack had $80,000 which he spent in two years, during which time he made a tour of the world and stopped for some time in New York where he has a wealthy sister. He is a firm believer that history repeats itself and when his money failed he again returned to Arizona. For the past few years he has been seeking in vain to regain his lost fortune by finding another bonanza until recently in the Santa Maria Mountains on a creek of the same name, a tributary of Bill Williams Fork of the Colorado he discovered one of nature's phenomena, a natural chimney of rich gold. The most noted mine of this character is the famous Bassick Mine at Rosetta, Colorado. The one found by Owens is not so rich but they have followed back on a ledge for 400 feet where the ore funs more than $100 to the ton while for a long distance from the golden aperture the lead, thirteen feet in width with ore worth $20 a ton can be traced. The report of this find is verified by many who have visited the place, and several reputable mining men now in this city, have been to the place years ago, prominent among whom is George Hamlin, owner of the Relief Mine.
