TEMPE. Pop 1,800. Maricopa county. Located at the gateway to the Salt River
Valley on the A E R R 8 miles s e of Phoenix the county seat. Has Baptist,
Christian, Catholic, Congregational and Methodist churches, 2 banks, 2 hotels, 2
libraries, 2 opera houses, a creamery, a flour mill, a veterinary hospital,
normal school, electric light and gas plants. A daily and weekly newspaper the
News is published. The principal industry is the raising of cattle, alfalfa
oranges and canteloupe melons.
