OLD DUTCH MINE December 29, 1897 Ariozna Republican Newspaper J.W. Watson writing to the Republican from Canon Diablo says that on recently passing through Silver City, NM to look at some mining property in the Santa Ritas, he met Walter King, a cook on his way to the Superstition Mountains to try to find the lost Dutch mine. He was accompnaied by an old Mexican who claimed to have worked in the mine. King's errand caused a great deal of excitement about Silver city and a number of prospectors are following them. It was believed that King had a map of the country. The Dutch mine is a proprty concerning which there has been more rumor than known facts. It was believed to be a very rich mine. The original owners were driven out by the Apaches. One of them was killed and the other was picked up on the desert insane. Several unsuccessful expedition have been made to rediscover the mine and occasionally a prospector comes upon a pick or shovel in an abandoned shaft, inducing him to believe that the Dutch mine has been found agiain. Other quests have turned out disasterously. In search for the hidden wealth more than one man has lost his mind. It is doubted by many that the mine has an existence.
