Grannis was shot and killed by Jack O'Neil. Grannis, it is said, got drunk and spent all his money and the bartender refused him more whiskey. He went out and returning shortly afterwards met O'Neil in front of the saloon and O'Neil shot him. It is said the two men had a row the night before. No further particulars could be learned. Jack O'Neil was for years a constable at Fort Thomas and may be employed in that capacity yet. A Los Angeles dispatch of January 26, to the Examiner says: A telegram was received by Chief of Police Glass from Geronimo Ariz. stating that F.B. Grannis who claimed to have a wife and child in Los Angles, was killed there Saturday night. None of the Grannis relatives could be found but it was learned that there was a bicycle agent named F.R. Grannis residing in San Francisco who might be the man referred to.
