He was killed with a knife by a Mexican whom he had earlier put out of the saloon. The Mexican and another who had ambushed and shot Luke Monihan were a few days later hanged from a cottonwood tree at the south corner of 1st Avenue and Washington Street by a party of Vigilantes.
