HUBERT SMITH History of Arizona, page 519 Another of Kingman's native sons who has wisely remained in his home community where he has attained a respected position in the legal profession is J.Hubert Smith. He was born in Kingman on the 21st day of July 1887 and is a son of Anson H. and Mary Agnes (Hughes) Smith. His father was born in New York in 1860 and was there reared and educated. In 1879 he came to Arizona, locating at Mineral Park as the representative of the Cerbat mining Company in which line of work he continued for several years, and in fact, has always been connected with mining interests. In 1882 in partnership with James J. Hyde, he established the Mohave County Miner, a weekly newspaper which proved a success from the start. He sold his interest in this paper in 1886 an for five years gave his entire attention to mining. In 1891 he re-purchased an interest in the paper, in the ownership of which he was joined in 1898 by M.A. Sawyer and this has ever since been one of the strongest newspapers in Mohave County. In 1883 Mr. Smith was married to Mary Agnes Hughes, a native of Nevada and to them were born ten children of whom Hubert is the oldest. J. Hubert Smith received his educational training in the public schools of Kingman and on leaving school entered his father's newspaper office in which he gained experience, serving as business manager during 1916-1917. During those years he devoted his spare time to the study of law and service as justice of the Peace from 1917 to 1920. He served as Clerk of the Superior Court from 1921 to 1926. On November 25, 1925 he was admitted to the bar and in 1926 was elected County Attorney in which office he served two years and on his retiring on January 1, 1929 he resumed the private practice of law, being associated with Jesse W. Faulkner, a former resident of the state of Washington and of Phoenix, Arizona. On December 25, 1910 Mr. Smith was married to Minnie Alma Meloy, a native of Nevada and they are the parents of three children, Lane, Donald and Albert.
