H.H. Watkins, who in 1883 opened the first drug store in 
Kingman and has continued in its successful conduct since 
that time, was born in California in 1858 and is a son of 
B.F. and Laura (Broughton) Watkins, natives of New York.  
The father was a pioneer of California, crossing the plains 
in 1847 as a member of the Donner Party but four years later 
returned east by way of the Isthmus.  After his marriage he 
again went to California and established one of the first 
nurseries in the state, giving a great deal of attention to 
its conduct and that of his extensive fruit business.  He 
died in 1880 and is survived by his wife.

H.H. Watkins acquired his education in his native state, 
attending a high school and business college and in 1880 he 
came to Arizona, settling in Mineral Park, where in partnership 
with his brother, F.F. Watkins, he opened the first pharmacy 
in the northern part of the territory.  After disposing of his 
interests in that enterprise he came in 1883 to Kingman and 
opened the first drug store in this community, establishing 
it upon a firm and reliable basis. It has become a well 
managed and profitable business concern.  Mr. Watkins has 
today a large and representative patronage which has been 
accorded him in recognition of his straightforward and 
honorable business methods and earnest desire to please 
his patrons.

In 1885 Mr. Watkins was united in marriage to Miss Jessie 
Tolman, of Watsonville, California and they have become the 
parents to two daughters.
