MRS. A.L. McKESSON November 19, 1898 The death of Mrs. A.L. McKesson at Kingman lst week recalls an incident in her career which will be remembered by many Arizonians. In 1876 while the Apaches who were then the courbge of Arizona, were on the warpath, a detachment of scouts headed by Ed Peck, had a fight with a prowling band about ten miles north of Camp Verde. The Indians were put to fight and on the battle field Peck picked up a papoose. The little one was about two years old and the kindly Peck gave one of the scouts $5 to carry the baby to Camp Verde. The scout that took the baby to camp was A.F. Banta, now editor of the Pick and Drill, Prescott. The child was afterwards taken to Prescott where she was adopted into the family of Wales Arnold, who gave her a good english education.
