HARRY MORGAN Arizona Republican Newspaper November 27, 1898 Last Sunday night shortly after 9 o'clock James Haggerty stabbed and killed Harry Morgan at Wolfe's Camp, about five miles east of Hackberry in Mohave County. From the evidence given at the coroner's inquest it was learned that Haggerty and his victim together with eight other men slept in a tent. About 9 o'clock Morgan and two other men went outside and returning to the tent were conversing about "skinning" mules and working on the section. Said Morgan "There is only one thing lower than a skinner and that is a snipe section hand." Haggerty who overheard the remark, said, "There are better men that you ____." Morgan replied, "I'm not talking to you and if you can't shut up I will go over there and smash your face." The two men used violent language to each other until finally Morgan rose and went towards Haggerty's bunk, with the intention of fighting him. When at the foot of the bed ,Haggerty said, "Throw away your razor and fight fair,". To which Morgan replied, "I don't need a razor to whip you." Then blows were exchanged and Morgan was driven back to the door of the tent where he fell over the foot of a bed with Haggerty on top. AS the two men struggled to their feet, Morgan cried out, "Oh, boy, he's got a knife." The two men struggled through the door of the tent and after a short struggle outside, Morgan fell to the ground dead. The coroner, sheriff and Dr. Ealy were notified says the Kingman Miner. They found the dead man lying on his face at the door of the tent and the murderer under guard. An examination of the tent showed that Morgan had been stabbed at the foot of Haggerty's bed and a trail of blood extended to the place where the man lay. An examination of the body disclosed seven distinct stab wounds. One extended fro the left of the pit of the stomach to the heart; another passed between the ribs over the heart to that organ, another under the left ear, severed many muscles in the neck; while a horribly ugly cut in the left arm severed the muscles near the shoulder and passed nearly through the arm. The other cuts were superficial. The man must have died instantly. Morgan was about 20 years of age and was a native of Kentucky. Nothing could be learned regarding his residence in the state. He was described as a light hearted fellow and among the men his death is deeply deplored. Haggerty when placed under arrest, had his hands and face covered with the blood of his victim. He is described as of a sullen and morose disposition. The coroner's jury found that Morgan had come to his death at the hands of James Haggerty and that the killing was not justifiable. The body was buried in Hackberry Tuesday. At the preliminary examination held in Kingman Wednesday Haggerty was bound over to the grand jury without bail.
