E.C. BURBAGE History of Arizona, page 508 Among the leading business men of Winslow stands E.C. Burbage, who is meeting with marked success as the owner of the Ideal Laundry of which he has been the owner for the past six years. He was born in Los Angeles, California on February 12, 1889 and is a son of William H. and Margaret (Cashion) Burbage. The father was born in New York City in 1854 and when but seven years of age was orphaned by the death of both of his parents. He was placed in a Catholic institution in Ohio in which he was reared and given a good education. In 1878 when twenty four years of age he started west and after spending some time prospecting in Kansas and other states, located in Trinidad, Colorado where he secured employment in the Colorado Trading Company. In 1882 he went to New Mexico and was there employed by a large mercantile house, having branches in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Two years later he came to Holbrook, Arizona and formed a partnership with J.Q. Adamson and Milton Chenowith, under the firm name of Adamson and Burbage. They opened a general mercantile store which proved a very profitable venture and they ran it successfully for five years, when they sold out and going to Los Angeles, engaged in the wholesale meat business. Prior to leaving Ohio Mr. Burbage had devoted two years to the study of law in Hiram College and after settling in Los Angeles he devoted his spare time to the further study of Kent and Blackstone. In April 1893 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of California and in that same year he returned to Arizona and opened a law office in Winslow. In 1895 he formed a law partnership with F.W. Nelson, and for many years they were associated both in professional work and in business affairs. In 1894 Mr. Burbage was elected District Attorney of Apache County and was re-elected to that office in 1898 and 1900 and was also appointed local attorney for the Santa Fe Railroad at Winslow. In 1900 he and Mr. Nelson organized the Navajo County Bank of which he was chosen president and sold his interest in 1912, devoting his time to personal interest until the time of his death which occurred on January 27, 1929. In 1905 Messrs. Burbage and Nelson also organized the Apache County Bank at St. Johns of which Mr. Burbage became president and Mr. Nelson, vice president and cashier. In the fall of 1909 Navajo County Bank of Winslow and the Apache County Bank of St. Johns merged under the name of the Navajo Apache Bank and Trust Company with one hundred thousand dollars paid-in capital of which Mr. Burbage became president. In addition to his banking interests, he became the owner of much real estate in this locality. He was a man of progressive and enterprising disposition, sound and dependable. E.C. Burbage received his early education in the public schools of California and St. Vincent's College in Los Angeles from which he graduated in 1915. He then went to work as a bookkeeper and general office man, which line of work he followed until 1923 when he bought a laundry at Winslow to the operation of which he has since given his attention. On June 12, 1919 Mr. Burbage married Jessie Caw of Cuper Fife Scotland and they are the parents of three children, William H., Doreen and Catherine.
