W.C. CALLAWAY History of Arizona, pg 517 Among those who have in charge the successful operation of the various public utility systems of Navajo County, none has shown a greater degree of efficiency and ability in the discharge of his duties than has W.A. Callaway, local manager for the Mountain States Telephone Company at Winslow. He was born in Archbald, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, on the 27th day of September 1874, and is a son of William and Caroline (Miller)Callaway the former of whom died in 1907 and is survived by his widow, who lives in Caldwell, New Jersey. W.C. Callaway attended the public schools of his native state and in 1887 when a lad of but thirteen years, began to learn the plumbing trade at Scranton, Pa. In 1898 he went to Alaska on a prospecting trip and in the following year he located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he went to work for the old Colorado telephone Company which is now a part of the Mountain States Telephone Company. In 1905 hews transferred to Denver as cable foreman and six years later was sent to El Paso, Texas as construction foreman. He filled that position until 1917 when he was transferred to Douglas, Arizona as wire chief and remained there two years. He did not hold each position very long for his loyal service and all round efficiency quickly won him promotions. In 1919 he was sent to Bisbee, Az as local manager and in 1924 received still further recognition in his transfer to the managership of the Winslow district in which capacity he is still serving in a very capable and satisfactory manner. On May 28, 1906 Mr. Callaway was united in marriage to Mayme Scott of Denver Colorado and since coming to Winslow she has become very actively interested in the civic and social affairs of the community. Mr. Callaway is vice-president of the Winslow Rotary Club, has entered fully into all local plans for the promotion of the public welfare along material, civic or moral lines and has won a high place in the respect of those who have come into contact with him.
