CARMEL L. GIRAGI Navajo County, Az History of Arizona page 511 The newspaper interests of Navajo County are well cared for by Carmel L., Columbus P. Giragi and George A. who are the owners and publishers of the Winslow Mail and the Holbrook Tribune-News which function in a manner that has gained for them leading places among the papers of northern Arizona. Carmel Giragi was born in Tombstone Arizona on the 12th day of September 1894 and is a son of Frank and Sarah Giragi, who are now living in Winslow, the father having retired from active business pursuits. Mr. Giragi was educated in the grade and high schools of Tombstone and in 1911 when seventeen years of age, began to learn the printing trade. Two years later he bought the "Tombstone Epitaph" which he carried on until 1923 when he discontinued the daily edition. In 1917 he also acquired the ownership of the Courtland Arizonian, which he ran until 1921 when he discontinued it, and in 1926 he came to Navajo County and bought the Winslow Mail. This was at that time a weekly, but he at once established a daily morning edition which was issued as such until March 1929, when he changed it to an evening edition. On January 1, 1927 he also bought the Tribune News at Holbrook, and he and his brothers have made of these papers valuable properties, both papers having materially increased their circulation and advertising patronage. As typographically they will compare favorably with any of their contemporaries and are rendering to their respective communities real news service. On June 15, 1927 Mr. Giragi was united in marriage to Miss Kitty Ash Sanders, of Tombstone Arizona and they have two children, George and Hoyt. Mr. Giragi is a member of the Elks, the Knights of Columbus; the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was the organizer and is now president; the Arizona Press Club and various civic and social organizations. He is a gentleman of sterling integrity, fine public spirit and community service.
