WILLIAM JOHN HOOKWAY Navajo Co. Az History of Arizona, pg 21 The present clerk of the county board of supervisors of Navajo County, William j.Hookway, is a man of marked ability and energy and his record since coming to this city eighteen years ago, has gained for him the respect of his fellowmen. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on the 10th day of March 1882 and is the fourth in order of birth of the five children who blessed the union of John Henry and Adaline (James) Hookway. His father, who had served for many years as superintendent of steel mills died in 1924 at the age of seventy seven years. William J. Hookway received his education in the public schools of his home city and then spent six years in steel mill offices after which he gained employment in the Cleveland Post Office in which he worked for three years and ten months. On May 23 ,1906 he came to Seligman, Arizona where he went to work on the offices of the Atchison, Topeka an Santa Fe Railroad. In 1911 he was sent to Holbrook as that company's agent, filling that position until 1916 when he resigned to engage in mercantile affairs. In 1927 he turned his attention to the general insurance business but is now filling the position of clerk to the county board of supervisors and clerk of the city of Holbrook. Mr. Hookway was united in marriage to Miss Anna L. Larson, a daughter of Norma and Elizabeth Larson and they are the parents of three children: Norman William, aged nineteen and a graduate of Holbrook High School and now employed in a bank here; William J. Jr, aged twelve years, and Jena Adeline, aged sixteen, both of whom are in school. Mrs. Hookway is a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, is a past president of the Women's Club and is very active in local civic and social affairs. Mr. Hookway has served as a member of the city Council and has been a member of the School Board since 1921. He belongs to Chalcedony Lodge No. 6 F and AM of which he is a past master and is a past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He is a man of purpose and useful life and enjoys the uniform confidence of all how know him.
