He was born in Decatur, Illinois on February 8, 1886, and is the third in order of birth of the four children of Martin L. and Mary A. (Ritscher) Vaughan. His father, who was a railroad train dispatcher, came to Winslow in that capacity for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, holding that position until 1911 when he resigned and established a furniture store, which he developed into a large business. Homer M. Vaughan received his education training in the public schools of Decatur, Illinois and then went to work for the Waters-Pierce Oil Company in St. Louis. Returning then to St. Louis he worked for two years in a wholesale house, at the end of which time he came back to Winslow, where for about two years he worked as timekeeper for an extra gang on the railroad. He took up telegraphy under his father's direction and in 1908 went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as operator, serving in that capacity and as station agent at several points on that line. In 1912 he severed his railroad connections, came into his father's furniture store, the management of which he assumed in 1919 and has since devoted his attention closely.
