Book Title: Polk's Arizona Pictorial Gazetteer And Business Directory

  WINSLOW. Pop 3,000. Navajo county. Altitude 4,833 feet. A rapidly growing town
on the A T & S F Ry 33 miles n w of Holbrook the county seat. It is an important
passenger division point where shops and round-houses are located and where a
large number of employes are required, having a monthly payroll of $300,000. New
shops and round-houses are to be completed by fall costing $200,000. Has
Catholic, Episcopal and Methodist churches, 3 good schools, 2 banks, 4 hotels, 2
opera houses, an electric light plant, good water and sewerage systems, an ice
plant, a new postoffice building, an Elk's home, costing $30,000, numerous
substantial business houses and institutes. A weekly newspaper the Mail is
published. The principal industries are live stock breeding wool growing,
alfalfa raising and gypsum mining.
