Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Columbus Whipple, private, Company H, 47th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism
in action near Bazoches, France, August 7, 1918. He crossed the Vesle River in
the face of enemy fire and rescued a drowning comrade in the deep, swift current
of the stream. Residence at enlistment: Showlow, Ariz.
