Book Title: Polk's Arizona Pictorial Gazetteer And Business Directory

  TUCSON. Pop 22,000. Pima county. Was settled by the Spanish at an early date
but was of little importance until the advent of the S P R R in 1884. It is the
county seat at the terminus of the E P & S W R R and on the main line of the S P
R R 300 miles w of El Paso Tex and 500 e of Los Angeles. Tucson's rapid growth
of the last few years may be attributed to her advantageous location as a
distributing point for southern Arizona and northern Mexico the rich mining
agricultural and grazing country surrounding and being at the gateway of the
rich districts of Sonora and Sinaloa. The elevation of 2,370 feet and the
dryness of the atmosphere gives Tucson a matchless climate which is attracting
thousands of tourists annually. Has Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Congregational
and Presbyterian churches, a State University including the Agricultural College
and Experimental Stations, a U S Magnetic Observatory, a Carnegie Desert
Botanical Laboratory, a U S government Indian school, also San Xaxier Mission
and Presbyterian Indian schools, a Methodist school for Mexican girls, a young
ladies academy, a high school, public and parochial schools, 2 libraries, a
well-equipped electric light and gas plant, street railway and water systems, 6
public parks, clean and well graded streets, beautiful homes, 4 banks, modern
hotels, 4 fine club buildings, 3 modern hospitals, 2 opera houses, flour and
planing mills, shops of the S P R R, 2 ice plants, a foundry and machine shop, a
cigar factory, 2 brick plants, an extensive wagon and harness factory, smelting
furnaces, several wholesale houses and a live and up-to-date chamber of commerce
which will furnish promptly detailed information concerning the city. Two daily
and several semi-weekly weekly and monthly papers are published.
