SANTOS ALVARADO WILLIAM ELLIOTT Arizona Republican Newspaper July 5, 1892 Tucson--A terrible tragedy occurred here about 1 o'clock yesterday morning. Officer William Elliott was about to arrest a Mexican named Santos Alvarado when the latter said "You can shoot me, but you can't arrest me." The officer advanced upon him when the Mexican drew a knife and stabbed Elliott in the region of the heart. Elliott pulled his gun and shot Alvarado dead. He himself died half an hour later. Alvarado was a resident of Phoenix and had been there five or six days.
