ALEX CHOUTEAU December 2, 1897 Arizona Republican Newspaper Late telegraph dispatches announce the killing of Alex Chouteau at Vinta, I.T. The slayer was a merchant named John Davis, who killed another man at Vinita a few months ago. Interest in this affair to Arizonans lies in the fact that the murdered man was a brother of Mrs. A.C. Bernard of Tucson, wife of one of Pima County's representive in the Nineteenth legislature. The Chouteau family is one of the best known in Missouri and among its descendants are numbered many influential citizens. Chouteau Avenue, St. Louis was named after one of the early members of the family. Frederick Chouteau, father of the dead man, established a trading post at the mouth of the Kaw in 1830. Alex Chouteau and his wife moved to the territory in 1884 and both joined the Cherokee tribe of Indians.
