RACHEL DUFFY Arizona Republican Newspaper December 7, 1895 Nogales: Frank Duffy received the sad news this morning of the drowning of his sister Miss Rachel A. Duffy, in the St. Lawrence River, New York. She was teaching a school on an island and had in company with another young lady, gone across to the mainland after her mail. While returning, the little boat struck a rock and capsized, throwing both girls into the cold water. They climbed onto the rock though where they remained till dark. Fearing they would freeze to death before help could reach them, Miss Duffy attempted to swim ashore. The current was so swift that she was compelled to return to the rock several times. It was during her fourth attmept to reach land that she went to the bottom. Her body was found furhter down the stream. The other young lady remained on the rock and was rescued about 9 o'clock at night, nearly frozen. The Vidette joins the many friends of Mr. Duffy in extending sincere sympathy. This is the second accident that has happened in Mr. Duffy's family. His father left home one evening a few years ago and fell and broke his back from which he died in a few hours. Miss Duffy would have graudated from Potsdam State Normal School in New York next June and it was her intention to visit Nogales.
