Ramsey, 90, a disabled veteran who came home from World War II to serve as a volunteer, died yesterday at Northwest Hospital's Hospice Family Care unit. Ramsey, who lived in Tucson since 1926, was recognized in 1984 as a Jefferson Award winner for public service and community leadership. Friends recall his visits to the sick and injured at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he logged more than 5,000 hours as a volunteer for at least 34 years. "Al was a tremendous individual. He would assist at church services on Sunday, visit the patients and help feed them," said Bob Taylor, the hospital's chief of volunteer service. Ramsey, a Navy veteran, saw action on the Pacific island of Saipan during the war. Many years later, he still talked about the war, including the month he spent on Saipan enduring air strikes. On one bombing run, he was blown from a foxhole and spent four months in a hospital recovering from back injuries. When he was able to, he visited troops in a field hospital, writing letters home for many of them. Ramsey, a painting contractor who received one of Arizona's first contractor's licenses, returned to Tucson in 1945. He received numerous awards from the Boy Scouts, the Scottish Rite, Sabbar Shrine Temple, and the Square and Compass Crippled Children's Center, where he was a charter member. He also received a National Commander's Award from the Disabled American Veterans for his assistance at the VA hospital. Ramsey's wife, Edna, died in 1990. Survivors include a son, Budd Ramsey of Las Vegas, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Bring's Memorial Chapel, 236 S. Scott Ave. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Burial follows at Evergreen Mortuary Cemetery & Memorial Park, 3015 N. Oracle Road.
