Manuel Escalada Arizona, The Youngest State, 1913 Through enterprise, commercial, integrity and business ability Manuel Escalada has in the course of twenty three years residence in Nogales become one of the most prominent business men of the city, where he is associated with his brother in the conduct of a leading dry goods establishment. He was born in northern Spain, April 11, 1867, and spent his childhood in his native country coming to America in 1883 at the age of sixteen. He settled in Brownsville Texas where he obtained a position as clerk in a mercantile establishment. He proved able, energetic and honorable, retaining his position for nine years and during that time saving enough money to establish a business of his own. He came to Nogales in 1892 and in partnership with his brother Leo started a small general store, which in twenty three years has expanded into a large modern establishment. He is now serving as treasurer and a director of the Chamber of Commerce and he is also a director of the Nogales Building and Loan Association. Mr. Escalada was married in Spain, September 27, 1899 to Miss Domitila Revuelta, a native of that country and they have three children: Joseph, age twelve, Louis, age ten and Manuel age eight.
