NOGALES. Pop 7,000 with its sister city. Santa Cruz county. Altitude 3,565 feet.
The county seat known as "The Line City" on the border line between U S and
Mexico which is an international street which separates Nogales from the sister
city Nogales Sonora which has a population of 3,000. On the main line and at the
junction of three branches of the S P R R 260 miles s w of El Paso Tex being the
overland gateway to the numerous thriving Mexican ports on the west coast. It is
the principal port of entry for the districts of Arizona the  custom receipts
amounting to more than $2,000 annually. Has one of the most delightful and
equable climates known. Is an important mining commercial and  manufacturing
center. Great areas of rich fertile lands that are susceptible of high and
profitable cultivation are tributary. Nogales has a $45,000 court house built of
native stone, a municipal water system with an inexhaustible supply of pure
mountain water, a sewer system in course of construction, a first class and
well-equipped volunteer fire department, electric light and gas plants,
Episcopal, Catholic, Congregational and Methodist churches, splendid school
buildings each side of the line to which is to be added a high school building
affording most exceptional educational advantages, St Dominies Academy which
cares for the education of seventy children, 2 hospitals, one of them St
Joseph's Hospital is well situated and has accommodations for forty patients,
the other Mira Monte Sanitarium, is an institution which has taken advantage of
the exceptional healthy climatic conditions for the treatment of chronic
ailments has recently enlarged its accommodations and finds necessity for
further enlargement. One bank, 4 hotels, a large foundry and machine shop
employing 150 men, a large cigar factory, an ice plant, a  brick yard, a cement
 brick plant, a planing mill and a live and up-to-date board of trade. Four
weekly newspapers, the Oasis the Border Vidette the La Era Nueva and the Patria
Nueva are published.
