George E. Mowry May 11, 1902 Arizona Republican Newspaper Mr. George E. Mowry got to figuring around last Friday and discovered that he was seventy years old; three score years and ten, which is a whole lot older than many people ever get to be and older than he ever was before. Mr. Mowry came here first as a soldier during the Civil War and after he was mustered out of the service came back again. Never since that time has he been beyond the territorial boundry. He is one of the men who were present at the birth of Phoenix, helped to build some of the first houses erected on the town site; and has never taken his eyes off the growing infant. He has but seldom been outside the county since then and but seldom has a day passed when Mr. Mowry was not seen on the streets of the city. The exceptions were the few days of illness he has had from time to time and the occasions years ago, when as sheriff of the county he was called away from home. Mr. Mowry is enjoying very good health for one of his age and will doubtless be spared for many years more of usefulness. He is now employed in the postoffice whee he has been the greater part of the time for over a quarter of a century.
